‘Es Firó’
One of the most famous events in Sóller is ‘Es Firó’. A show that you can’t miss! It’s celebrated in honor of the victory of the town’s residents over the Turkish invaders in 1561.
The event is spread over 2 days. It starts with the pirates’ parade. A colourful parade in which hundreds of people dressed in clothes of the era represent the Turkish invaders and the residents of Sóller. During the parade, you can see scenes of daily life from that time, such as markets and crafts.
Later, in the main square, is the highlight of the celebration. When the main square is full of people the simulated battle begins, with firearms, canons, and wooden swords. An amazing show which transports you back in time to when the historic battle took place.
It’s not only Sóller that has celebrations, there are many nearby villages which also offer unique experiences.
‘Fiestas de la Beata’
The ‘Fiestas de la Beata’ in Valldemossa, a village located 30 minutes away from Sóller by car, is one of the most emblematic celebrations on the island of Majorca. This festivity is held in honor of Beata Catalina Thomás, a religious woman, who was canonized by the Catholic church in 1930.
One of the most important events during this celebration is the procession in her honor. During this procession, the locals from Valldemossa parade through the streets carrying standards, religious images, and other symbolic elements. Additionally, there are also cultural and festive activities, such as music concerts, popular dances, firework displays and a fair with artisan stalls and local gastronomy.
San Juan
Deià, a beautiful village located in the Tramuntana mountains in Majorca, and very close to Sóller, is well-known for its artistic and cultural atmosphere. Every year, from 21st-24th June, we celebrate the festivities of San Juan, a very popular event on the island.
During these celebrations, the village is full of life and colour. People are out in the streets to enjoy the numerous activities which are organized, such as concerts, dances, parades, games and the traditional ‘correfoc’, where the participants are dressed as demons and run through the streets while throwing fireworks around.
Without a doubt, the most spectacular thing about the San Juan celebrations in Deià is the famous ‘nit de foc’ or fire night. On this evening, people get together on the beach to light huge bonfires and throw firecrackers and rockets into the sky. The atmosphere is magical and extremely festive, and seeing all the fires on the beach is absolutely incredible.
